Ask most Hong Kong golfers about their favourite time to play and the answer is almost always the same: autumn. After months of heat, humidity, storms and cancelled tee times, the cooler, drier days from October onwards are what many of us have been waiting for.
The problem is that a summer of playing less often leaves most games a little rusty. Here is how to get ready so you can enjoy the season rather than spend the first month finding your swing.
Start With an Honest Check-Up
Summer habits creep in without you noticing. Shorter practice sessions, swinging in the heat and long gaps between rounds all affect your swing. Before you book a run of rounds, find out where your game actually is. Hit some shots with a launch monitor and compare your numbers with where they were earlier in the year.
Rebuild Your Short Game First
Chipping and putting are the first skills to fade when you stop practising, and they cost the most shots. Spend your first practice sessions of the season on:
- Solid contact on basic chips from tight lies
- Distance control on putts from 6 to 12 metres
- Holing short putts under a little pressure
Check Your Yardages
Cooler, drier air changes how far the ball travels compared with the peak of summer. Your distances may also have changed if your swing has drifted. Do not rely on the numbers you used in spring. Check your carry distances with each club, particularly your wedges and mid-irons.
Warm Up Properly
Cooler mornings mean muscles take longer to get going. A proper warm-up before your round helps you swing freely from the first tee and reduces the risk of injury. A few minutes of hip, trunk and shoulder mobility, followed by some easy swings building up in speed, makes a big difference.
Set a Goal for the Season
Autumn and winter are the months when most Hong Kong golfers play the most. That makes it the perfect time to set a clear goal, whether that is breaking 100, breaking 90 or lowering your handicap, and build a plan to get there.
