Discover how a GOLFTEC club fitting uses data-driven insights and expert coaching to match you with the perfect clubs - tailored to your swing for maximum performance.
Walk into any golf shop in Hong Kong and it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Full sets, package sets, drivers, hybrids, wedges and putters in every shape and price. Most beginners either spend far more than they need to or buy clubs that make learning harder than it should be.
Here is what you actually need to get started.
You Do Not Need 14 Clubs
The rules allow up to 14 clubs, but a beginner can learn and play perfectly well with far fewer. A good starter setup looks something like this:
- A driver or fairway wood - for tee shots. Many beginners find a fairway wood easier to hit at first
- One or two hybrids - to replace long irons, which are difficult for newer golfers
- Irons from 6 or 7 to pitching wedge
- A sand wedge - for bunkers and short shots around the green
- A putter
That is roughly eight to ten clubs, which is plenty.
Package Sets: Good or Bad?
Package sets that include everything in one box can be decent value. The downside is that they are built for an average golfer. If you are particularly tall, short, fast or slow, the length and shafts may not suit you.
What Matters Most in Beginner Clubs
- Forgiveness. Game-improvement clubs with larger sweet spots make off-centre hits much less punishing.
- The right length. Clubs that are too long or short force you into awkward positions.
- The right shaft. Too stiff and the ball goes low and right. Beginners usually need more flexible, lighter shafts than they expect.
- Enough loft. More loft makes it easier to get the ball in the air.
Should Beginners Get Fitted?
Many beginners assume fitting is only for good players. In reality, the right clubs make learning easier, and the wrong clubs can build bad habits from day one. You do not need the most expensive clubs, but you do need clubs that suit your body and swing.
At GOLFTEC Hong Kong, you get custom specifications at standard retail prices, and the fitting fee is waived when you buy. Browse our range on the golf clubs page.
Lessons Before Clubs?
If you have not had lessons yet, consider starting there. After a few sessions, your swing becomes more consistent, and a fitting gives much more useful results. Many of our students take a few lessons first and then get fitted once their swing has settled.
