Most amateur golfers consistently underclub - they take the club that gets them to the hole on their best shot, not their average shot. In Hong Kong where every shot on an expensive course counts, good club selection matters enormously.
Know Your Real Distances
Not your best shot - your average carry distance. Most golfers overestimate their distances by ten to fifteen percent. Spend time on a range with a launch monitor to find your real numbers.
Play to the Middle of the Green
Unless you are a low handicapper, aim for the middle of the green rather than the flag. Flags tucked by bunkers or close to hazards are not realistic targets for most recreational golfers.
Account for Wind
Hong Kong's exposed hillside and coastal courses - particularly Kau Sai Chau on the open water - often have significant wind. A fifteen to twenty km/h headwind can cost you one full club.
Take More Club, Swing Easy
When in doubt between two clubs, take the longer one and swing at eighty percent. A smooth swing with a longer club will almost always outperform a hard swing with a shorter one.
