How to Hit a Bunker Shot - GOLFTEC Hong Kong Coaching Guide

Most recreational golfers fear the bunker more than anywhere else on the course. GOLFTEC Hong Kong coaches explain why the bunker shot is more forgiving than it looks and how to play it confidently.

Here is something that surprises most recreational golfers: the greenside bunker shot is actually one of the most forgiving shots in golf. You are not trying to hit the ball - you are trying to hit the sand.

Open the Face First

Before you grip the club, open the face of your sand wedge - rotate it clockwise so it points right of your target. Then take your grip. This brings the bounce of the club into play, which stops it from digging too deep.

Open Your Stance

Align your feet and body to the left of your target while keeping the face aimed at the flag.

Aim Behind the Ball

Focus on a spot approximately five centimetres behind the ball. That is where you want the club to enter the sand. You are not hitting the ball - you are hitting a thin slice of sand beneath it.

Accelerate Through

The most common mistake is decelerating through impact. You need to accelerate through the sand, not into it. The resistance of the sand will slow the club naturally.
