In my role as the Head of Education for GolfTec SEA, I ask coaches to make sure they are able to deliver an 'elevator pitch' when potential students inquire about GolfTec and what we do.

My answer is: "At GolfTec, we specialise in golf coaching and custom fitting of equipment, utilising high-end technologies. We offer fact-based instruction and evidence-based practice to help people play better golf."

I say those words and believe those words — but what does it actually mean? Let me spend a bit of time talking about what we do at GolfTec and why you should consider us if you are looking for help with your game.

Everybody Has Got an Opinion

We live in a world where information related to golf instruction has never been easier to access. Although YouTube and ChatGPT are excellent information resources, they are flawed because the information on there is not absolutely specific to you. In addition, if you misdiagnose your problem when searching for a solution, the information you receive is unlikely to be particularly helpful.

In my view, spending too much time online — combined with the cardinal sin of listening to unsolicited swing advice (from your friends, partner, or the old man who lives on the driving range) — perpetuates the cycle of poor scores and unfulfilling days on the course.

At GolfTec, we are on a crusade to break that dark cycle by offering data, clarity, and a development plan that is absolutely specific to you. Your journey starts with a Swing Evaluation.

What to Expect From a Swing Evaluation

Prior to the swing evaluation, you will receive a Pre-Evaluation Phone Call from your GolfTec certified personal coach. It is a chance for you to connect with your coach before you meet in person, so that you can share your golf history, frustrations, and your goals for the short and longer term. For your coach, it is a great opportunity to share more about their coaching background and let you know what to expect from the session.

In my words, the swing evaluation is a 60-minute session where you hit balls with a mid iron enough times for us to gather baseline data that helps us Assess your competence in the fundamental skills of contact, power, and direction.

From there, we utilise our technologies — video cameras, OPTIOMOTION technology, and Foresight GC Quad — to thoroughly Analyse your swing and give you clarity on the problems that you experience.

After that, you will receive some Coaching so that you can experience how your coach goes about helping you make changes. Finally, your coach will give you an honest Recommendation in terms of a lesson and practice plan that will help you fix your problems and achieve your goals.

More succinctly: a swing evaluation guarantees a fact-based explanation for what is causing your golfing pain, an experience of what a GolfTec lesson entails, and an honest chat about what it will take to reach your goals. We remove opinions from the process and design a plan that is bespoke to you.

There is no obligation or pressure to sign up for anything beyond the evaluation — but if you enjoy the experience and decide to continue, the evaluation is free of charge and you just settle for the plan that you choose.

What Will Your Lesson and Practice Plan Look Like?

The fastest way to improve your golf is through regular coaching sessions supplemented by evidence-based practice in between. In that regard, your coach will plan your golf lessons at a cadence that suits your lifestyle and time budget. Ideally we would meet on a weekly basis, but many students choose bi-weekly as it makes more sense for them.

Your sessions will be a mixture of indoor lessons (technique work, full swing, short game, virtual on-course) and outdoor/on-course sessions — we have relationships with golf courses throughout SEA where we are able to take you. Varying the lessons in this way keeps things fresh, interesting, and fun, whilst targeting all of the areas that will help you reach your goals.

Another benefit of joining GolfTec is that all of your lessons will be uploaded to the GolfTec app, so that you can review the pertinent information, watch your lesson recordings, and read your lesson notes — which include specific references on how to practise with purpose.

Purposeful practice requires evidence, and that is why GolfTec Game Plans come with up to 90 minutes of in-centre practice time each week, where you get video and data feedback for each swing you make. This feedback removes the guesswork and allows you to stay accountable to what you've been asked to work on.

In a game that will challenge you at every turn, evidence-based practice allows you to retain your sanity. If you don't measure, you are just guessing.

Summary

Golf is the hardest game in the world. It has the ability to make you feel a broad spectrum of emotions, sometimes from one moment to the next. As golfers, we invest significant emotion, time, and resources in the pursuit of our goals — and as such, we are susceptible to being on the lookout for the magic swing tip that unlocks golfing nirvana.

The irony is that jumping from tip to tip or from swing thought to swing thought is exactly why your scores have plateaued and your frustrations remain the same. If you keep trying the same thing, you will keep getting the same results.

GolfTec offers an opportunity to break that cycle.

If any of the above resonates with how you are feeling, I would recommend getting on a call with a GolfTec coach and exploring whether a swing evaluation is something that you would like to do.

Speak to a human. Give them a chance to listen to you. Give them a chance to show you that helping you play better golf is what we do each and every day. Develop a long-lasting relationship with your coach and keep resetting your goals as you achieve them.

It might be the best decision you ever make for your golf.
